Iran is willing to exchange prisoners with the United States during Biden’s presidency, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Khatibzadeh said on Jan. 24, RIA Novosti news agency said.
In an interview with ISNA news agency, Khatibzadeh said, “Unfortunately, the Americans usually hold Iranian citizens in the United States hostage.
As (Iranian Foreign Minister) Zarif said, we are willing to exchange prisoners with the United States.”
Khatibzadeh made the remarks amid the arrest in the United States of Iranian political scientist Kave Afrasiabi, who could face up to 10 years in prison for allegedly acting as an agent of a foreign government without registering with the U.S. Justice Department.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry called the charges baseless and hoped the Biden administration would reconsider the “American addiction” approach of “holding Iranian citizens hostage under any pretext.
