Modi lays the foundation stone for the new parliament building. Whether it can be built or not remains to be decided by the Supreme Court of India.
December 11th – On theĀ 10th local time, Indian Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the new parliament building, but the building was not approved for construction.
Based on Indian media reports such as India Today, a petition challenging the project is currently awaiting a ruling by the Supreme Court of India. Therefore, construction on the project cannot begin immediately.
Critics point out that the Indian government will spend Rs. 200 billion on this project, which can be better used to fight the coronavirus epidemic and repair the economy hit hard by the epidemic.
According to the report, the new building covers an area of about 64,500 square meters. It also includes a constitutional exhibition hall, a parliamentary lounge, a library, multiple conference rooms, dining area and sufficient parking spaces.
The Speaker of the Lok Sabha of India, Birla, previously said that the existing parliament building would be preserved as a historical heritage, “hopefully that the new building will be officially put into use as the 75th anniversary of India’s independence is celebrated (2022).”
