The Portland Police Department issued a statement on the night of the 31st that the police had defined the protest as riots due to the violence used by the demonstrators.
Local police said that the demonstration began near the police headquarters at 7:45 p.m. local time on the 31st, and the number of demonstrators gradually increased from a small group to 80 to 100.
Some of them used violence in demonstrations, including smashing roadside shop windows, graffiti on buildings and other buildings where the police headquarters is located, and some of them even attempted to break into the justice center through tools.
Subsequently, violent demonstrations intensified, with demonstrators throwing stones, frozen water bottles and balloons that may contain burning substances to the skin at the police.
In addition, the demonstrators also set fire to various debris on the sidewalks and roads. Portland police reported that police responded with pepper balls, rubber bullets or other less lethal ammunition to fight back the riot.
