The Myanmar Election Commission issued a notice on the evening of October 16, local time, announcing the cancellation of the current general elections in some towns and districts of some provinces and states because the general elections cannot be held freely and fairly in these areas.
At present, the regions that have been cancelled from participating in the general election include parts of six provinces and states, including 192 village groups in 11 townships in Kachin State, 53 village groups in 6 townships in Kayin State, Bago Province 42 village groups in 2 townships, 1 village group in Mon State, 9 towns in Rakhine State and 137 village groups in 4 towns in Rakhine State, and 6 towns in Shan State 133 village groups in the whole territory and 17 towns.
On October 16, the President of Myanmar issued an order requiring all localities to take actions against illegal acts that disrupt the general election in accordance with the law. The illegal acts that will be banned include abuse of race and religion and the destruction of and equality.
A few days ago, three candidates of the Democratic League, the ruling party of Myanmar, were arrested by the Rakhine Nationalist armed forces for violating epidemic prevention restrictions and have not been released yet.
Myanmar will hold this general election on November 8. 6,969 candidates from 94 political parties will compete for 1,171 federal and provincial seats.
In the last general election in Myanmar in 2015, more than 400 village groups in 34 towns and districts in 5 provinces and states failed to hold elections due to security and other reasons.
