From the beginning of this year to the end of September, the New York Municipal Hotline received more than 2,1500 rat complaints, compared with more than 18,000 in the same period in 2021.
The mayor of New York City signed a bill in November requiring new buildings to kill rats before they are put into use, and designated specific rodent control areas to prevent rodent infestation in the city.
