According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on February 3, the Russia-US Treaty on Strategic Arms Reductions has been extended for five years until February 5, 2026.
According to the Russian Satellite News Agency, quoting the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russia and the United States exchanged diplomatic notes on February 3 to complete the relevant internal procedures of the agreement to extend the validity period of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.
The content of the treaty remains unchanged and the agreement will enter into force immediately.
U.S. Secretary of State Blincoln said in a statement on the same day that at a time when U.S.-Russia relations are tense, it is essential to impose verifiable restrictions on the number of Russian long-range nuclear weapons.
The United States will use the five-year extension to seek an arms control agreement with Russia involving all Russian nuclear weapons.
According to previous reports, Russia and the United States signed the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in 2010, which aims to limit the number of strategic nuclear warheads and means of delivery deployed by both countries.
After the expiration of the Russian-American INF Treaty in 2019, the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty became the only arms control treaty between the two countries, which will expire on February 5, 2021. On January 26, 2020, Putin and Biden agreed on a telephone call to extend the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.
