Aug 21 (Reuters) – The European Union has not recognized the Taliban regime or held political talks with it, European Commission President Jean-Claude Jung said on Saturday.
Von der Leyen said she would propose an increase in the European Commission’s allocation of 57 million euros in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan this year. She noted that EU development assistance was linked to respect for human rights, the treatment of minorities and respect for the rights of women and girls, and that “we are likely to hear what the Taliban say, but we will measure them first by their behaviour”.
Von der Leyen noted that the European Commission is ready to provide funding to EU countries helping to resettle Afghan refugees, and she plans to raise the issue of resettlement at next week’s G7 meeting.
