Greece Covid-19 pandemic squeezes medical resources and the number of routine operations has severely reduced
The number of new confirmed cases of Coronavirus Pandemic in Greece in a single day has been increasing by four digits for several consecutive days.
The accelerated expansion of the red zone in large districts has already saturated the operation of outpatient departments, wards and intensive care units in hospitals.
The official of the Greek Citizen Protection Department recently requested that the volume of routine operations in hospitals in the yellow area (A area) of the Greek epidemic map be reduced by 20%, and the volume of routine operations in hospitals in the red area (area B) should be reduced by 80% to mobilize more resources. Responding to the rapid increase in confirmed cases of Coronavirus Pandemic.
At present, Attica, Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Kavala, Trikala, Ioannina and other places including Athens are all in the red zone.
The Federation of Greek Hospital Doctors (OENGE) expressed doubts about the above decision, saying it was “catastrophic and fatal” because low-income groups could not pay for private hospitals and had to go to public hospitals for necessary operations, reducing the amount of surgery.
This prevents them from getting timely treatment, which increases the risk of death from diseases other than COVID-19.
