April 24 Caitlin Jenner, a U.S. television personality and former Olympic champion who underwent sex-change surgery in 2015, announced her candidacy for governor of California on Friday, local time.
Jenna posted on social media that she would join more than two million California residents who have signed a petition calling for incumbent Governor Newsom to step down to challenge Democratic corruption and fight for the state’s future.
A longtime Republican, Jenna recently submitted her campaign materials in Los Angeles, sparking the nation’s most high-profile transgender campaign to date.
Born in October 1949, Jenna won the men’s 10 all-around title at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and is a household name in the United States, having appeared on the 2007 reality show “Walk with the Kardashians” and became publicly female after undergoing sex-change surgery in 2015.
