Von der Leyen on Afghanistan: The EU will continue to help those in need

August 21st 2021 European Commission President Von der Leyen said at a press conference the same day that the EU will continue to work to help people in need of EU protection on a global scale, including not only those who have withdrawn from Afghanistan, but also those who remain in Afghanistan. At the same time, the EU is firmly committed to the continued work of non-governmental organizations in Afghanistan.

Von der Leyen also said that the EU has set aside 1 billion euros for its aid programme over the next seven years, but that the money must be used with respect for human rights, respect for minorities and respect for the rights of women and girls.
