Law enforcement officials arrested more than 178,000 illegal immigrants at the southern U.S. border in April, the highest number in 15 years, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Customs and Border Protection said it intercepted 178,622 people at the southern border in April, more than 5,000 more than in March and more than 10 times as many as in April last year.
Data show that more than 111,000 adults act alone, an increase of 10 per cent month-on-month;
“We continue to see a lot of illegal immigrants trying to cross the southwest border into the United States,” said Troy Miller, acting director of Customs and Border Protection. ”
Customs and Border Protection says 62.5 percent of those intercepted were deported by the U.S. under the Coronavirus rules. The agency did not say how many others were deported by the U.S. under other regulations and how many were eventually allowed to stay in the U.S.
As Democratic U.S. President Joseph Biden eased restrictions on immigration imposed by his predecessor, the number of immigrants trying to enter the country illegally has increased significantly recently, mostly from Central America. Four-fifths of illegal immigrants intercepted by the United States come from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
