May 5th 2021 Surveillance video released by New York police shows a woman talking to two Asian women walking on the sidewalk from behind, NBC reported. Police said the woman asked them to remove their masks and hit one of them in the head with a hammer. After the attack, the woman with the hammer fled. The New York Police Department’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the attack. As of Tuesday morning, no arrests had been made.
It is understood the victim, a 31-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with a torn head. Another 29-year-old Asian woman was not injured. The woman who was attacked told NBC she was “shocked” that she had lived in New York for two years. “I’ve never faced anything like this before,” she said.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo condemned the attack in a statement Released Tuesday. “I am disgusted by this violent attack in Midtown Manhattan, the latest despicable hate crime against Asian Americans in New York State,” he said. It said it would do everything in its power to protect vulnerable groups.

New York City police said on May 3, local time, authorities are investigating an Asian woman attacked with a hammer by a stranger, U.S. media reported.
Police said the attack took place at around 20:40 local time on May 2, two Asian women walking on the sidewalk, the female suspect behind the request to remove the mask.
One of the 31-year-old Asian women was then hit with a hammer and taken to hospital with serious head injuries, while another 29-year-old Asian woman suffered no physical injuries. The suspect then fled the scene with a murder weapon.
The New York Police Department’s Hate Crime Unit said the investigation was ongoing and released surveillance video and screenshots of the suspect’s appearance, appealing for information.
