According to an Iranian News TV report on the 21st, General Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, arrived in Tehran on the evening of the 20th to visit Iran.
He will consult with Iranian officials on the continued cooperation between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran.
Grosi said on social media recently that he was going to visit Iran after Iran notified the International Atomic Energy Agency that it would suspend the voluntary implementation of the Additional Protocol to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
He will “meet with senior Iranian officials to find a mutually acceptable solution that does not violate Iranian law” so that the IAEA can continue the necessary verification work in Iran.
The Iranian Parliament passed a bill last December, requiring the government to further break through the restrictions of the Iran nuclear agreement if it does not find the sanctions against Iran “loose” within a certain period of time.
Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif said on the 17th of this month that according to this bill, Iran will suspend its implementation of the Additional Protocol to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons from February 23 if the parties concerned to the Iran nuclear agreement still fail to fulfill their obligations within the specified time. However, Iran will still comply with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and its safeguards agreement.
In July 2015, Iran reached a comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue with the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China and Germany.
As part of Iran’s commitments in the Iran nuclear agreement, Iran has taken some voluntary measures related to nuclear activities, as required by the Additional Protocol to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, giving the International Atomic Energy Agency broader authority to supervise Iran’s nuclear activities.
The suspension of the implementation of the Protocol means that these measures will be suspended.
