The earthquake in the Aegean Sea on October 30 brought a lot of casualties to Turkey’s Izmir Province. Two local survivors recounted the thrilling scene of the earthquake.
73-year-old Susan and her neighbor, 70-year-old Ashe, both live in Izmir province. Susan said that when the earthquake hit, she stood on her balcony and saw a building across the street. The building collapsed in a minute.
(Turkey) earthquake survivor Susan: I was standing on the balcony on the third floor when the earthquake occurred.
Nothing happened during the first shock, but during the second shock (the building across the street) on the seventh, sixth and fourth floors.
The building collapsed like a sandwich, one after another. Then there was another shock, even more intense.
The building collapsed on the street in a cloud of dust, making a loud noise. All this happened within a minute.
Another survivor, Ai Xie, said that at the time she and her family were in their homes on the first floor, and the earthquake made her feel like she was passing death.
(Turkey) Earthquake survivor Ashe: We passed by death. (At the time) We were on the first floor and the building was shaking. I had never been so scared in my life.
