According to the Presidential Decree on the “Strategy for the Development and National Security of the Arctic Region of the Russian Federation before 2035” published by the Russian Legal Information website, Russia will also build 16 emergency rescue ships and tugboats of different capabilities, 3 hydrographic survey ships and 2 pilot ships .
According to the report, the “Leader”-class nuclear-powered icebreaker is designed to ensure navigation on the North Sea route throughout the year. Its main performance data are as follows: speed 22 knots, length 209 meters, width 47.7 meters, maximum icebreaking thickness 4 meters, and displacement nearly 7 meters Million tons. The power plant is mainly two RITM-400 reactors; a steam turbine with four turbine generators, each with a power of 37 MW; an electric propulsion system with four propulsion motors, each with a power of 30 Megawatts.

According to reports, in addition to the “Leader” class nuclear-powered icebreaker, the 22220 nuclear-powered icebreaker can also ensure Russia’s leading position in the Arctic. The icebreaker is 173.3 meters long, 34 meters wide, and has a displacement of 33,500 tons.
These icebreakers will be able to navigate the fleet under Arctic conditions. They will provide navigation services for ships transporting energy from the Yamal and Jidan Peninsula gas fields and from the Kara Sea shelf to the markets of Asia-Pacific countries.
