The European Commission signed an agreement with Greece to build a new refugee camp. Greece has allocated 121 million euros.
According to Greek media reports, on December 3 local time, the European Commission and the Greek government signed an agreement on the construction of a large standardized refugee camp on Lesbos Island.
According to reports, the camp will be built with a special EU fund and is expected to be put into use in early September next year.
At the beginning of September this year, there were several fires in the Moria refugee camp on Lesbos Island, causing 13,000 refugees to temporarily be displaced. Subsequently, about 9,000 refugees were arranged to spend the winter in temporary tent camps built on the island.
The remaining refugees were either transferred to mainland Greece or accepted by other EU countries. After signing the contract on December 3, several senior EU officials said that strengthening cooperation between EU institutions and Greece is the key to integrating refugee problems into sustainable solutions.
In addition to the new refugee camps on Lesbos Island, the EU has supported Greece to build a new small refugee camp on Samos, Cos and Leros. For this purpose, the European Commission has allocated 121 million euros to Greece in November this year.
