December 18th local time, WHO held a regular press conference on COVID-19. Maria van Kohoff, technical director of the WHO Health Emergency Project, said that South African researchers had noticed that they had found some COVID-19 variants.
The COVID-19 virus will change over time, and these variations are predictable.
The working group has worked with South African researchers to see whether these mutations will affect the severity of the virus, whether it will be more easily transmitted, and their impact on diagnosis, treatment and vaccines. There is no indication of a change in the behavior of the virus.
