December 18, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United Nations Children’s Fund and the World Food Programme jointly said that according to the Comprehensive Food Security Phase Classification Report released on the same day, people in parts of Pibor County, Jonglei State, South Sudan face food depletion and catastrophic hunger.
The above-mentioned United Nations agencies said that the causes of this catastrophic hunger are regional conflicts, the COVID-19 epidemic, the economic crisis and the impact of floods. They have upgraded their response and jointly called for immediate humanitarian assistance to the region.
The Integrated Food Security Phases Classification Report released on the 18th predicts that 6.5 million people in South Sudan face severe and urgent food insecurity from October to November this year, and the number may rise to 7.24 million between April and July 2021.
