April 13th, local time, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a joint statement of the co-convenors of the Istanbul Conference on the “Afghanistan Peace Process”.
The statement said that Turkey, Qatar and the United Nations will jointly convene high-level meetings of representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban from April 24 to May 4, 2021. The meeting was held in Istanbul and was hosted by Turkey. The primary goal of the meeting is to accelerate the ongoing intra-Afghan negotiation process in Doha and find a just and lasting political solution.
The agenda of the meeting and other elements are the Afghan parties involved in the consultation. The meeting will aim to help the negotiating parties reach a series of basic principles that will reflect the parties’ agreed vision for Afghanistan for the future, a political settlement road map and ending the conflict.
The statement stressed the hope that this meeting will provide an important opportunity for all parties to support the Afghan people to move towards peace, stability and prosperity.
