Late at night on December 4th local time, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing satisfaction with the recent progress made in resolving the Gulf crisis.
The statement said that Turkey is satisfied with the recent positive developments in the Gulf crisis that has continued since June 2017, and Turkey highly appreciates the positive efforts of Kuwaiti leaders to resolve the crisis. Turkey hopes that the parties will resolve the dispute as soon as possible through unconditional dialogue and end the unjust blockade and sanctions imposed on Qatar. As always, Turkey will continue its efforts for the security and stability of the Gulf region.
On June 5, 2017, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt announced that Qatar had severed all diplomatic relations and imposed sanctions and blockades on Qatar on the grounds of “supporting terrorist organizations” and “destructing regional security”. Subsequently, some countries announced that they had severed diplomatic relations with Qatar, causing tension and serious crisis in the Gulf region.
After the crisis, Turkey, as an important ally of Qatar in the Middle East, said that it firmly sided with Qatar, and the relationship between the two countries entered a closer “honeymoon period” after the severance of diplomatic relations crisis. On November 26, Tamim, the Emir of Qatar, visited Turkey again and held the 18th meeting between the two in 70 months with Turkish President Erdoğan. The two sides signed 10 cooperation agreements again, covering multiple fields.
On the same day, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Sabah, Kuwait’s Foreign Minister, told the outside world that consultations aimed at resolving the Qatar’s severance of diplomatic crisis had yielded fruitful results, and the parties agreed on cooperation to maintain regional peace and stability.
