In this regard, some experts analyzed that the Russian air defense system is just an excuse for the United States to impose sanctions on Turkey.
Yusuf Araba, a Turkish political analyst and security and strategy expert, said that the sanctions imposed by the United States on Turkey have nothing to do with the defense system purchased by Turkey.
The United States tried to curb Turkey by controlling the way of arms purchase and tried to strengthen its control over Turkey in many parts of the Middle East. Therefore, the system is just an excuse to impose sanctions on Turkey.
“Turkey contracts with Russia to purchase S-400 anti-aircraft missile system in 2017” NATO countries such as the United States have repeatedly warned Turkey not to buy this Russian system.
Russia began to deliver the S-400 system to Turkey in July 2019. Turkish President Erdoğan confirmed in October 2020 that Turkey has tested the S-400 system, saying that the test will continue and Turkey will not seek permission from the United States for this purpose.
On December 14, 2020, the U.S. government announced sanctions against Turkey on the grounds that Turkey purchased a Russian-made S-400 air defense system.
Regarding the sanctions imposed by the United States, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning it, saying that the U.S. measures will have a negative impact on Turkish-U.S. relations, and Turkey will adopt reciprocal sanctions.
