White House spokesman Jane Passaki said on January 21 that the United States proposed to Russia to extend the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty for five years.

The treaty is the only remaining arms control treaty between the United States and Russia, which will expire on February 5.

Passaki said that the treaty is the basis for strategic stability between the United States and Russia, and five years is the maximum extension allowed by the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.

The Associated Press quoted a person familiar with the matter as saying that U.S. national security adviser Jack Sullivan conveyed the proposal to extend the treaty to Russian ambassador to the United States Antonov on the 21st.

Previously, Russia reiterated that the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty should be extended, but the Trump administration has not agreed with Russia on the extension of the Treaty.
