December 15th, the United Nations Security Council approved Nikolai Mladenov as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Libya. Mladenov is the current United Nations Special Envoy for the Middle East and has been working on the Palestinian-Israeli issue for the past five years.
On the same day, multiple people mediating the Libyan conflict also called for both sides to “redouble their efforts” to bridge their differences to hold Libyan domestic elections.
Under the mediation of the United Nations, the two sides of the Libyan conflict signed a ceasefire agreement in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 23, deciding to implement a “complete and permanent” ceasefire throughout Libya. A new round of political dialogue between the two sides was held in Tunis in November, agreeing to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on December 24, 2021.
