May 28th, local time, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill passed by the Senate last week by a vote of 54 to 35 to form an independent commission to investigate the January 6 protests at the Capitol.
Democrats say an independent commission of inquiry was set up to prevent such attacks on democratic institutions in the future.
The bill failed to get the 10 votes needed to pass it from Republican senators, and U.S. media analysts believe former President Donald Trump still has some influence over the Republican Party and highlights partisan divisions following the Capitol protests.
