South Korean prosecutors demand a 9-year sentence for Samsung’s head

December 30.  According to Yonhap News Agency, the Seoul High Court of South Korea retrial of Lee Jae-yong’s “confidentiality in politics” case on December 30th, the prosecutor demanded that Lee Jae-yong be sentenced to 5 years in prison. 

Li Zairong, 52, is the vice chairman of Samsung Electronics and the actual head of the Samsung Group.

According to the prosecutor’s allegations, Lee Jae-yong was suspected of bribing former South Korean presidents Park Geun-hye and Choi Sun to help them inherit business rights. 

The court of first instance found that part of Li Zairong’s bribery crime was convicted and sentenced him to five years in prison. The court of second instance sentenced him to two and a half years’ imprisonment and a probation of four years. Li was released in court.

In its final judgment, the South Korean Supreme Court revoked the judgment of the court of second instance against Lee Jae-yong and other persons involved in the case, Park Geun-hye and Choi Sun-sil, and sent the case back to the Seoul High Court for retrial.
