So short of staff? U.S. government mobilizes NASA employees to help care for migrant children

According to Russia Today (RT) on the 7th, the Biden administration’s request to mobilize federal employees to help deal with the rising wave of immigrants on the southern border of the United States has now reached NASA. It is also reported that NASA has been asked to provide a facility for the resettlement of immigrants.

On Tuesday, according to an internal email leaked to NASA employees, which asked NASA employees to sign up voluntarily to help care for “children without legal immigration status”. And the biggest need is in the fields of “youth care” and “guidance and translation”.

Last month, ABC News reported that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had applied to NASA to ask whether Moffitt Federal Airport in Mountain View, California, could be used as a place for migrant children. Darryl Waller, a spokesman for NASA, told ABC that the airport is “currently idle” and that its use “will not affect NASA’s ability to carry out major tasks”.

However, many people, including some Democratic activists, also expressed doubts about the report, calling the idea “unabceptable”.

Kripenstein’s e-mail was revealed by Kathleen M., Acting Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) on March 25. The letter signed by McGettigan is similar. McGettigan appealed to “our federal agency’s family of outstanding civil servants to support this humanitarian effort” and was voluntarily sent to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to care for minors in transit for four months.

The report pointed out that less than two days after his swearing in office, U.S. President Biden announced that he would withdraw former President Trump’s immigration and border policies.

Preliminary data released by Reuters this week showed that by the end of March this year, the number of immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border had reached the highest level since March 2006, including a record 19,000 unaccompanied minors.

Biden insists that immigration flows are seasonal, not uncommon, and in any case has nothing to do with his policy changes, but is caused by natural disasters, gang violence or poverty. However, there are also some child immigrants who wear T-shirts with the “Biden please let us in” to shoot videos, and some minors openly say that they are rushing to the U.S. border because of Biden’s policies.

On Tuesday, the Washington Times, a conservative-leaning newspaper, reported that DHS was even considering restarting the construction of Trump’s border wall to “fill the gap” and help curb the immigration transit tide.
