Russian Foreign Minister: “We have no illusions” about Biden

by YCPress

According to the website of Russia’s newspaper Izour on January 18, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commented on the 2020 summary press conference on Trump’s Twitter account was blocked, arms control, foreign policy ideals, compliance with the Minsk Agreement and talking about the situation in karabakh.

However, the main topic of the press conference on January 18 was Russia’s confrontation with the West and the situation related to Alexei navalny.

The report said that the actions of the United States and most of its Western allies in 2020 were aimed at “destroying the architecture of international life” and “discarding traditional forms and norms of international law”.

This is Lavrov’s description of the past year in his opening remarks.

The most obvious example of this is the gradual abandonment of Western countries’ work at the United Nations, establishing exclusive mechanisms outside it, the so-called “group of fellows”, and then imposing their decisions on other participants in international relations.

These mechanisms first deal with the field of cybersecurity and media freedom.

The report pointed out that he repeatedly talked about the “destructive behavior” of the West, especially the United States, and that “American diplomats in any country will rudely pick up the microphone and tell his resident countries should stop dealing with Russia”.

Will the Biden administration change this situation? Lavrov said, “We don’t have any illusions.”

He said that the United States will continue its domination of the world.

Containing Russia and China is still one of its diplomatic tasks. “It may be more polite”, but the nature of the policy will not change.

According to the report, arms control is also one of the important topics, first of all, the continuation of the START III Treaty. The treaty will expire on February 5, 2021. Lavrov said Biden is an expert in the field of arms control.

He said that Russia’s position on this is that while extending the treaty, it will start drafting a new document covering all types of strategic weapons.

“We will wait for concrete proposals,” Lavrov stressed.

“Our position is well known and it remains valid.”

At the same time, Lavrov also talked about the domestic problems of the United States.

Commenting on the blocked Twitter account, for example, he said that large tech companies “do not even want to know what rights they have in their own country” and “do not take their constitution seriously at all”.

Lavrov also criticized the presidential election process in the United States.

In November, voters were forced to express their wishes by mail ballots — and as a result, about 40% of the votes came from such a procedure, which was “fairly serious”, he said.
