April 24 , the New York Police Department said it was investigating a suspected hate crime against Asians , and that a 61-year-old Asian man was attacked and seriously injured on the streets of New York and is in a critical condition .
The New York Police Department said the incident occurred around 20:20 local time on the 23rd, 61-year-old Asian man in Manhattan, New York, East Harlem area of the collection of cans, a man from behind raided him and seriously injured, the victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance. At present, the police have not determined whether the victim was targeted for racial reasons, police are pursuing the suspect.
Surveillance video released by police showed the suspect repeatedly kicking and punching the victim several times in the head after the victim fell to the ground, before leaving the scene.
According to the New York Police Department, there has been a surge in hate crimes against Asian Americans in New York City. As of the end of March, 42 incidents had been classified as hate crimes against Asians, compared with zero in the same period last year.
