According to police, the suspect is a 30-year-old man living in the area. The suspect’s employment information was linked to the incident, but police did not know whether the man was still working at the store.
Local media said the suspect fled the scene on a nearby bus after the attack, and police are still searching for the gunman. One witness said “everyone fled the grocery store in panic.” Media video showed dozens of police cars and ambulances then arriving at the grocery store’s door.
Schools near where the shooting took place have been “closed” and local police have urged nearby residents not to go out and urged members of the public not to visit their buildings.
It is not clear what the motive for the shooting was. Located in the western part of Long Island, New York, in Nasau County, the site of the incident is about 20,000 people, mostly Hispanic, asians about 6% of the local population.
