According to Japanese media reports, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced on the 10th that four male and female passengers who arrived in Japan from Brazil and were diagnosed with COVID-19 in airport quarantine had detected new variants of COVID-19 different types from the United Kingdom and South Africa.

The four men in their 40s, women in their 30s and men in their 10s arrived at Haneda Airport from Brazil on the 2nd.

Males in their 40s arrived asymptomatic, but were later hospitalized urgently due to deteriorating respiratory status. Women in their 30s and men in their 10s have symptoms of headache and fever respectively, while women in their 10s have no symptoms.

Although the virus detected in four people also has a common mutation with the virus found in the United Kingdom and South Africa, it belongs to different new variants.

Its transmission ability and whether it is more likely to cause severe disease are not clear.
