NATO international troops may stay in Afghanistan after the deadline for withdrawal in May

Four senior NATO officials said that international troops planned to stay in Afghanistan after the May deadline envisaged in the Taliban-U.S. government agreement.

According to the report, this move may increase tension between international forces and the Taliban.

An anonymous official said: “The conditions have not been met, and with the new U.S. government coming to power, the policy will be adjusted, and the previously prevalent idea of rushing withdrawal will be revised, and there will be a more careful withdrawal strategy.”

Former U.S. President Trump’s administration signed an agreement with the Taliban early last year to withdraw all foreign troops by May this year in exchange for the Taliban fulfilling certain security assurances.
