The Myanmar military nominated a new member of the Federal Election Committee on February 3 to monitor the voting situation in the next election.
Previously, the military had repeatedly accused the then ruling party, the National League for Democracy, of “election fraud”, and the Electoral Commission denied the military’s allegations.
According to Myanmar’s news magazine Ayrawaddy on the 3rd, the newly appointed election committee of the Myanmar military includes six members led by Chairman U Thein Soe.
U Tin Soo is reported to be a former major general of the Myanmar Defence Force, who was responsible for overseeing the 2010 general election. According to Reuters, foreign observers were not allowed to enter during the 2010 general election.
On February 1, Myanmar President Wen Min and State Senior Government Daw Aung San Suu Kyi were detained by the military.
The Myanmar military said that power had been transferred to the commander-in-chief of the National Defense Forces, Min Aung Lai, and the country imposed a one-year state of emergency.
February 3, Min Onglai said that military intervention was “inevitable” due to “fraud” in the election.
The military promised that after the end of a year-long state of emergency, Myanmar will re-convene general elections and state power will be transferred to the newly elected political parties.
