According to the website of the Star-Spangled Banner on February 16, more than a dozen military bases from Fort Drum, New York to Fort Hood, Texas, were closed on the 16th local time when large areas of the United States were controlled by cold and dangerous weather.
Dyce Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, shut down water on Tuesday due to power outage at the water treatment facility in Abilene. Non-essential operations of at least 15 military bases have been postponed or suspended.
The National Weather Service said that more than 150 million Americans were under some kind of winter weather warning due to severe cold weather, snow and ice.
According to the report, Bucksdale Air Force Base near Bossier City, Louisiana, was closed on Tuesday due to snow, sleet and freezing rain.
As winter blizzards sweep through parts of the southern and eastern United States, this is one of at least 12 military bases closed on Tuesday.
The report said that bad weather even caused several bases in the north, such as Drumburg, to be closed.
Also closed are the Fort Leonard Wood Base in Missouri, the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, the Fort Campbell Base in Kentucky, and the Fort Pork Base in Louisiana.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety and health of our personnel, and we are prepared to bring people back to work when conditions improve,” said Julie Frederick, spokesperson for Redstone Arsenal.
Fort Riley, Kansas, reported that the power company’s continuous power outages caused power outages across the base on Tuesday morning.
Some support services were forced to close.
According to the base, key facilities have been running with generators.
