Japan’s Defense Ministry has apologized for mishandling radioactive waste by the Self-Defense Forces

The Land Self-Defense Forces in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, mistakenly commissioned companies without Japanese government permission to dispose of radioactive waste that exceeded standards in 2019, the Japan Broadcasting Association (NHK) reported on April 30, local time. At present, the waste is returned and kept in the SDF facility. Japan’s Defense Ministry said it was “deeply reviewed and deeply apologizes.”

Japan’s Defense Ministry said that in February 2019, the Kanto Resupply Service, located in Xiapu, Ibaraki Prefecture, mistakenly entrusted its disposal to companies that did not have permission from the Japanese government when they disposed of parts containing radioactive material. Subsequently, the relevant parts were returned due to the detection of highly radioactive material.

Japan’s defense ministry said the error was caused by a failure by the head of the force to properly understand the rules governing the handling of waste containing radioactive material. The defense ministry said it was “deeply reviewed and apologizes” and said the error had no impact on surrounding residents.
