December 18th – On the 17th local time, Japan’s “traditional architectural craftsmanship” successfully applied for heritage, mainly including 17 traditional crafts such as tatami production, which is also Japan’s 22nd intangible cultural heritage of mankind.

According to a report by Japan’s Kyodo News Agency on the 17th, the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO held an online meeting on the same day and approved an application for listing Japan’s “traditional architectural craftsmanship” in the “List of Representative Works of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humankind”.

The “traditional architectural craftsmanship” declared by Japan includes 17 fields, mainly including traditional carpenters, masonry, thatched roof and tile roof technology, painting technology and tatami production technology. It uses mostly natural materials such as wood, grass and earth, and builds traditional Japanese buildings such as Nara Falong Temple.
