Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga held talks with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Bach on the 16th and said.

“I am determined to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games next summer to prove that mankind has overcome Coronavirus and show the world reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake. Achievements.”

International Olympic Committee President Bach said, “I hope the Tokyo Olympics will become a symbol of human cooperation and unity worldwide after Coronavirus pandemic.”

On the afternoon of the 16th, Bach held talks with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Both sides confirmed that relevant agencies will unite to overcome the impact of Coronavirus pandemic and make the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics safe and secure events.

When meeting with Yuriko Koike, Bach sanitized his hands at the entrance of the meeting room and knocked elbows with Yuriko Koike instead of shaking hands.

During the talks between the two sides, the chairs were placed at a distance of about 2 meters. Koike Yuriko said that she will do her best to prevent pandemic, and said: “(The Tokyo Olympics) is an important event for anyone in the world. On the evening of the 16th, Bach and the chairman of the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee Yoshiro Mori held a joint press conference. Bach said that in hosting the Olympics, safety comes first. Now the people of the world are worried about their lives tomorrow, hoping that next year’s Tokyo Olympics will be a bright future. Sports are very important to people. Japan’s professional baseball and gymnastics and other events, under the premise of taking certain protective measures, have also safely held games watched by spectators.

Bach believes that ensuring the safety of spectators and watching the game with peace of mind is the most important. There may not be scenes full of spectators in the Tokyo Olympics, but some spectators should still be allowed to enter the game under the premise of ensuring safety. The final decision on whether spectators can enter the Olympic venues to watch the games will be determined by the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee after considering the opinions of the World Health Organization and experts.

Regarding the issue of sharing the additional costs of preparing for the Olympic Games, Bach said that the International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee are still evaluating. Although there have been several consultations, it is impossible to disclose all the figures now.

Regarding the pandemic prevention situation in Japan, Bach said that he can feel that the pandemic prevention work in Japan is proceeding in an orderly manner, in sharp contrast with Europe.

It is reported that Bach will visit the Tokyo Olympic venues and athletes’ village on the 17th.
