November 3rd. a man in his 80s in Tokushima Prefecture
Japan, died after cooking and eating puffer fish.
The local health department detected tetrodotoxin from his body and is investigating the specific cause of death.
According to Japan’s “Tokushima Shimbun” report on the 3rd
the man living alone had died when he was found by his family.
The doctor detected tetrodotoxin in his body and reported it to the health department.
It is not clear what type and parts of puffer fish he eats.
The local health department stated that normal people would become paralyzed and
stop breathing within 20 minutes to 3 hours after ingesting tetrodotoxin.
They also called on the public to never cook and eat puffer fish without authorization.
