According to a report by Iran’s Mehr News Agency on the 13th, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Alagshi said in an interview with Khamenei’s official website a few days ago that if the international sanctions against Iran are not lifted, whether the United States returns to the Iran nuclear agreement or not, the agreement will have no value to Iran.
Aragshi said that the nuclear agreement is based on two pillars, the first pillar is Iran’s action on its own nuclear activities, which has happened for some time, and the second pillar is that the other party must lift sanctions against Iran.
If neither pillar exists, the Iran nuclear agreement will be meaningless.
Therefore, if the return of the United States to the Iran nuclear agreement can lead to the lifting of sanctions against Iran, then the Iran nuclear agreement is important for Iran.
Since the U.S. Trump administration announced its unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement in May 2018, the U.S. government has resumed comprehensive sanctions against Iran and added a series of new sanctions.
In response, Iran has taken five steps to suspend the commitments of part of the Iran nuclear agreement and has produced 17 kilograms of enriched uranium with a concentration of 20%.
After taking office, U.S. President Biden made it clear that the United States will seek to return to the Iran nuclear agreement, but asked Iran to stop uranium enrichment activities first.
Arragshi said that Iran’s sanctions that should be lifted include the sanctions mentioned in the Iran nuclear agreement, the sanctions restored to Iran after the withdrawal of the United States from the agreement, and the new sanctions imposed by the United States against Iran.
If the United States wants to return to the Iran nuclear agreement and maintain the original form of the agreement, the United States must lift sanctions against Iran.
He also said that if Iran is to return to the commitments in the Iran nuclear agreement, the sanctions against Iran must be lifted first, as Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei said, and Iran will resume compliance with the commitments in the agreement after Iran confirms that the sanctions have indeed been lifted.
