IRAN HAS ALWAYS WELCOMED DIALOGUE WITH SAUDI ARABIA, BUT HE HAS NOT CONFIRMED OR DENIED THAT THE PAIR HELD DIRECT TALKS THIS MONTH, A SPOKESMAN FOR IRAN’S FOREIGN MINISTRY SAID THURSDAY, REUTERS REPORTED.
Reported that the two countries broke off diplomatic relations in 2016. The two countries have been embroiled in several proxy wars in the region to gain influence.
Saudi and Iranian officials held talks in Iraq to ease tensions as the United States moves to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and end fighting in Yemen, a senior Iranian official and two regional sources told Reuters. The Financial Times was the first to report on the talks.
“We have seen reports of the Isha talks, but the information cited in these reports is sometimes contradictory,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said at his weekly news conference. ”
“It is important that the Islamic Republic of Iran always welcome the dialogue with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and believes that it is in the interests of both peoples and conducive to peace and stability in the region,” he added.
