According to reports, a woman was buried in heavy snow while skiing at a ski resort in Niigata Prefecture on the 16th, suffocating to death. 

From the evening of the 16th to the morning of the 17th, thousands of cars in Gunma and Niigata prefectures were congested on the highway due to heavy snow, with the longest congestion reaching 16.5 kilometers.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that as of the morning of the 17th, the snowfall in Tone County, Gunma Prefecture reached 217 cm, a record high. 

The Meteorological Agency predicts that from the night of the 18th to the day of the 19th, the coastal areas of the Sea of ​​Japan may experience heavy snow again. 

The Meteorological Agency called for strict prevention of traffic accidents and avalanches.
