May 2nd local time, dubai police in the United Arab Emirates announced that they had arrested 177 beggars since they entered Ramadan on April 12.
Colonel Ali Salem of the Dubai Police Said anyone begging in the UAE would be fined 5,000 dirhams (about $1.5k) and sentenced to up to three months in prison.
“Professional gangs that manipulate beggars or recruit beggars from abroad face up to six months in prison and a fine of at least 100,000 dirhams (about $30k ),” he stressed.
He urged everyone not to be deceived by the tragic stories told by the beggars and to find that beggars should report them to the police.
