China has pushed for the establishment of a United Nations security team for peacekeepers

Under the impetus of China, the United Nations Peacekeeping Personnel Security Team was established at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the 27th, with China, Brazil, Indonesia and Rwanda as co-chairs.

Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said at the launch ceremony that the establishment of the peacekeepers’ security team is aimed at building a platform, strengthening information communication, promoting policy coordination, enhancing capacity-building, further safeguarding the safety of peacekeepers and promoting substantive progress on the security agenda for peacekeepers.

United Nations peacekeeping operations are an important means of maintaining international peace and security, and peacekeepers have become valuable assets of international peace.

At present, the outbreak of Coronavirus and regional hot spots, ethnic conflicts, terrorism, improvised explosive devices and other threats overlap, peacekeeping personnel security risks continue to rise, so far this year, 49 peacekeepers have given their precious lives for the cause of peace.

Improving the security of peacekeepers is a systematic project that relies on the participation of all parties to form a joint effort.

More than 150 guests attended by the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Affairs of the United Nations, Mr. Lacroix, the Under-Secretary-General for Security, Mr. Mishaw, and the Permanent Representatives, Deputy Representatives and Military Advisers of the countries concerned.

The members of the security team include 49 countries and regional organizations, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Morocco, South Africa, Pakistan, India, Egypt, Ethiopia and the League of Arab States, covering major peacekeeping missions, police contributors, contributors and host countries, reflecting broad inclusiveness and representation.

China is a builder of world peace and a contributor to peacekeeping operations, and is the second largest contributor to peacekeeping and permanent members of the Security Council. At the urging of China, the Security Council adopted its first resolution on the security of peacekeepers last March.
