February 10 – A pay slip for an ancient Roman soldier found by British archaeologists shows that the soldier was penniless after paying for the necessities of life.
The paycheck, which was discovered in Masada, Israel, in 2019, belongs to Gaius Messius, an ancient Roman soldier, dating from A.D. 73 to AD 75, according to The Sun on February 9.
Messius’ monthly salary was 50 dinars in ancient Rome, but after being deducted by the army, Messius could not actually receive wages, including food, boots, belts and coats.
Joanne Ball, an archaeologist at the University of Liverpool, England, said: “As far as I know, the ruler will pay all the soldiers first, and then try to get it back.”
