May 23rd 2021 at least five people died in a traffic accident while evacuating after the eruption, according to Konstantin Ndima, the new governor of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In addition, lava flows have stopped moving towards the town of Buhe on the outskirts of Goma, which is largely out of danger. There have also been incidents of security during the lava flow threat, with some shops stolen and a prison in the city of Goma close to escaping.
Constantine Ndima said the government will hold an expanded meeting with the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the same day to discuss assistance programs for the incident.
According to some local residents, lava stopped moving a few blocks from Goma airport, and a metal plate burned by lava could be seen around it. Until the morning of the 23rd, the whole block was smoking.
