NAIROBI, May 9 2021 At least 25 people have been killed in heavy rains in several parts of Somalia in the past week, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Monday.
The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement that heavy rains caused flooding in many parts of Somalia, killing at least 25 people, including 14 children and seven homeless people. In the town of Jowhar in central Shabelle state, heavy rains triggered flooding that flooded farmland and affected some 25,000 people from 15 villages.
The statement said that the late arrival of the rainy season in Somalia this year is not conducive to crop seeding production, so it may further exacerbate the country’s food security problems.
