February 22nd local time, the office of Ipolito Chania, a member of Parliament of the New Constitutional Party of Peru, issued an announcement saying that Chania died that morning at the age of 67.

According to Peruvian media reports, 21 members of the Peruvian Congress have been infected with the novel coronavirus, and Chania is the first member of parliament to die from the novel coronavirus.

It is reported that Chania was treated at Arequipa General Hospital, the second largest city in the country, which originally planned to intubate Chania on the 22nd.

According to the latest data released by the Peruvian Ministry of Health, as of February 21 local time, there were 1,283,309 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 45,097 deaths in the country.

Recently, Peruvian Minister of Health Ugat announced that the Peruvian government will decide whether to extend mandatory social isolation measures in parts of the country at the ministerial meeting on the 24th of this month.

Previously, the government had extended mandatory social distancing measures until February 28.
