According to the US Geological Survey Earthquake Information Network, the earthquake occurred at 13:48 local time (8:48 Beijing time). The epicenter was at 19.741 degrees south latitude, 177.552 degrees west longitude, and the focal depth was 416.9 kilometers.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami warning for the earthquake.
Tonga is located in the volcanic seismic zone of the Pacific Rim, where earthquakes occur frequently due to the collision of crustal plates.
