December 24 2021 – According to AFP, at 3 a.m. local time on the 24th, a ferry on the Chulogarti County River in southern Bangladesh caught fire, killing at least 32 people and injuring more than 100 others. The ship carries nearly 1,000 people.
Local police said that the ferry caught fire in a river 200 kilometers south of the capital Kadak, while the ship was sailing from Dhaka to Borguna south. Live video shows that in the dark, the burning ship was burning into the sky. After the fire was extinguished, the hull was blackened.
Bangladesh’s Daily Star reported that many passengers jumped into the river to survive the fire. One survivor recalled, “At that time, I smelled the burning smell and went out of the cabin to inspect. After finding the fire, my family and I jumped into the river and swam ashore.”
