Chinese Coronavirus Vaccine Research and development progress.
Report From Ministry of Foreign Affairs!
On November 18, 2020, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian presided over a regular press conference. The following is a partial record.
Question: Recently, multinational companies have made new progress in the research and development of Coronavirus vaccines. We know that several companies in China are also conducting clinical trials of vaccines in multiple countries. Can you tell us more? How is China’s participation in international vaccine cooperation progress?
Answer: Thank you for your attention to the development of vaccine research and development of relevant Chinese companies. Vaccines are a powerful weapon against the new coronavirus. Since the outbreak of Coronavirus, the Chinese government has laid out five technical routes for inactivated vaccines, recombinant protein vaccines, adenovirus vector vaccines, attenuated influenza virus vector vaccines and nucleic acid vaccines , and conducted research and development in a standardized and orderly manner. China’s vaccine research and development units and the majority of scientific research workers have made arduous efforts to promote vaccine research and development day and night in strict accordance with scientific laws and regulatory requirements.
Up to now, 5 vaccines in China are undergoing phase III clinical trials in many countries including the UAE, Brazil, Pakistan, Peru, and many other vaccines are stepping up to advance phase I and II clinical trials. Like you, I look forward to hearing the good news from them as soon as possible.
Regarding international vaccine cooperation, the Chinese government and companies have been actively participating in international vaccine cooperation through multilateral and bilateral channels.
In addition to the cooperation with relevant countries to carry out vaccine research and development, China also maintains close communication and cooperation with international organizations such as the World Health Organization, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, and the Alliance for Pandemic Prevention Innovation.
It has joined the World Health Organization’s “Global Cooperation to Accelerate Development , Production, Fair Access to New Tools for Prevention and Control of Coronavirus pandemic” initiative and “Solidarity Project” international multi-center clinical trials.
China has also joined the “Coronavirus Vaccine Implementation Plan” to promote the fair distribution of vaccines and ensure the provision of vaccines to developing countries.
At the same time, more capable countries will be encouraged to support the “implementation plan.” China expects that China’s vaccines will be included in the procurement list of the “Implementation Plan” as soon as possible after the research and development of vaccines are completed, and will make China’s contribution to achieving the availability and affordability of vaccines in developing countries.
