Iranian Foreign Minister: If Biden lifts the sanctions, Iran will re-comply with the Iran nuclear agreement
Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif said on the 18th local time that if the US Democratic presidential candidate Biden lifts sanctions on Iran, Iran will fully implement the Iran nuclear agreement signed in 2015.
According to Reuters, Zarif said in an interview with Iran’s official newspaper on the 18th, “If Biden is willing to fulfill the promises made by the United States, we can also immediately fulfill all of our commitments in the (Iranian nuclear) agreement. At P5+1 It is possible to negotiate within the framework of (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany, the six countries on the Iranian nuclear issue).”
Zarif said, “We are ready to discuss how the United States can rejoin the agreement. The situation will improve in the coming months. Biden can lift all sanctions on Iran through three executive orders.”
Previously, Biden wrote in a column for CNN in September: “I will provide Iran with a credible path to return to diplomacy. If Iran strictly abides by the Iran nuclear agreement again, the United States will Join the agreement again as the starting point for subsequent negotiations.” In 2018, Trump announced his withdrawal from the agreement and resumed sanctions on Iran. Since last May, Iran has gradually suspended the implementation of some of the terms of the agreement.
In this regard, the “New York Times” analysis on the 17th pointed out that it is not easy for Biden to get the United States to rejoin the Iran nuclear agreement. On the one hand, Trump is still taking swift action at the end of his term to increase sanctions on Iran and sell advanced weapons to Iran’s hostile countries in the Middle East. It is difficult for the new president to reverse these policies. On the other hand, although Zarif did not insist on compensation from the United States, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani faced strong opposition from conservatives in the Iranian general election in June next year. In order to win the support of domestic voters, Rouhani is expected to demand that the United States pay a high price for Iran’s return to the agreement, including lifting the punitive sanctions imposed on Iran during Trump’s tenure, and paying billions of dollars in compensation for this. It is unacceptable to Biden and the US Congress.
